THE
STORY:
Once again, a show for charity proved to be one of
our better live experiences, what with an accommodating
club, NYC's Chelsea-based lounge Suite 16, and hands-on
promoters in Metrofly, who put the show together
to benefit Stand Up For Kids. This was only
our fourth show of '04, after 6 long months spent
finishing up recording & production for Fortune
Favors The Bald.
After less-than-stellar shows in Union Square Park
(great turnout, terrible sound) & Manhattan College
(terrible crowd, not-so-great sound) weeks earlier,
this was a refreshing change-of-pace, featuring standout
performances by new drummer Dennis Leeflang, & bass
player Joe Nerve, who were both brought into the
fold by Bumblefoot through other projects. A
small but responsive crowd dug our heavy, electro-rock
style (at least compared to the other more acoustic & less
eclectic acts), especially our earthy cover of a-Ha's
80's classic, "Take On Me," which never
sounded better coming out of our instruments. Bumblefoot,
Dennis, & I vyed for the "Coolest Cold Weather
Hat Award," and my choice to mix some of
the slower jams in with the hi-energy stuff
in a short set proved prophetic.
The irony was that we were all debating the pros & cons
of playing to loops & canned tracks right before
we hit the stage, and then we proceeded to play what
was arguably our best show in years, sonically speaking. Like
I've said before, a great monitor mix, a soundcheck, & the
abilities of solid musicians will do wonders, if
given half the chance.
Metrofly raised some much-needed cash for the charity & for
some needy kids, we made some new friends, both at
the club & in the other acts, and I dare say
we looked damn sexy up there (and we have the pics
to prove it!). What's best is that we all got
a much-needed shot in the arm that will hopefully
lead to bigger & better shows in 2005. See
you then.
